Automation & Controls Engineer

Overview

We’re hiring an experienced Automation & Controls Engineer for an established engineering organization supporting technically complex industrial, manufacturing, and process-related projects. The position focuses on industrial automation, instrumentation, PLC/HMI programming, control-system design, equipment testing, troubleshooting, start-up, and commissioning.

You’ll work throughout the complete engineering project lifecycle, collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams and customers to design and implement reliable industrial control solutions. This is a hands-on position offering exposure to sophisticated automation technologies and opportunities for continued technical and professional growth.

Specific Skills
  • 5+ years of relevant industrial controls, instrumentation, or automation experience.
  • Strong PLC programming and ladder-logic experience.
  • Hands-on Siemens PLC and drive-platform experience, including Step 7, S120, or similar Siemens technologies.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley, GE, Wago, or similar industrial control platforms.
  • PLC and HMI programming and system integration experience.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD Electrical.
  • Ability to interpret and develop P&IDs.
  • Experience developing control-system architecture, wiring schematics, and control-panel layouts.
  • Experience with industrial instrumentation and control systems.
  • Hands-on I/O checkout and troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience calibrating instrumentation and tuning PID loops.
  • Experience with equipment testing, start-up, validation, and commissioning.
  • Engine test-cell instrumentation and controls experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication, documentation, organization, and problem-solving skills.
Responsible For
  • Develop and review control-system architecture, flow diagrams, P&IDs, control sequences, and design specifications.
  • Develop and review wiring schematics and control-panel layouts.
  • Program, configure, and integrate PLC and HMI systems.
  • Work with Siemens, Allen-Bradley, GE, Wago, and similar industrial control platforms.
  • Perform system functionality testing and validate programming against control sequences.
  • Develop instrument indexes, bills of materials (BOMs), responsibility matrices, and engineering documentation.
  • Conduct I/O checkout and troubleshoot control-system issues.
  • Calibrate instrumentation and tune PID control loops.
  • Perform equipment start-up, testing, and validation.
  • Support equipment installation and commissioning activities.
  • Conduct risk and hazard analyses.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, project stakeholders, and customers throughout the project lifecycle.
Additional Requirements
  • Position supports an established organization operating within the industrial engineering, automation, and technical consulting sector.
  • Approximately 25–40% national travel, including occasional overnight stays, may be required.
  • Travel may include project meetings, equipment installation supervision, testing, troubleshooting, start-up, and commissioning.
  • Candidates should be comfortable working directly with customers and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Position is subject to applicable U.S. export-control requirements.
  • Candidates must satisfy applicable eligibility requirements for access to export-controlled technical information.
